Inside of DV lottery. Understand how the system works

Every year millions of people enter DV visa lottery for a chance to win a Green Card and become eligible for a permanent residency in the US.

The Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV) Program requires the principal DV applicant to have a high school education, or its equivalent, or two years of qualifying work experience as defined under provisions of the US. law, and be from an eligible country.

The list of countries whose natives are eligible for DV lottery 2019 can be found here.

Although it is not difficult to meet eligibility criteria to enter the lottery, once a person is selected in the lottery there is a scanning process to evaluate a winner’s eligibility for further processing of an immigrant visa.

To begin with, all information provided by the winner entering the lottery must be correct. Otherwise, the winner will be automatically disqualified. In addition to this, the winner cannot be a criminal or mentally disturbed, must be able to work and support himself/herself and must not be a threat to the US national interest.

Once selected in the lottery, it is important to start green card application process or apply for adjustment of status if currently in the US on another non-immigrant visa as soon as possible. There are only about a half of visas available each fiscal year compare to the number of selectees in the lottery.
